lying down, human bp must be about 60 mm Hg (mean) for proper flow.
Standing up it is higher, since that pressure is still neede, and the hydrolic pressure falls as height increases above the heart.
The "literal" answer to your question would be 0/0. That is dead. However, if you mean how low can it be and still be ok, that can be answered a little differently. Normal, optimal blood pressure is 120/80, as the rule. The TOP number can be a little more flexible than the bottom. When the bottom number hits 90, it is cause for concern, a visit to the doctor, and intervention toward getting healthy.
Low blood pressure is a relative term. If one is HYPOTENSIVE, they are below the 120/80. Some people are lower than that, all the time. Thin people, smokers, and others can be conscious and alert at 60/35-40 while reclined and resting.
So, blood pressure is relative to what each individual's baseline BP is. What your body can tolerate as a low, may not be the same as another individual. And, should it drop suddenly, may cause fainting. It also depends on WHAT the reason for the drop is. There is a big difference in standing up too quickly and hemorrhaging.
i had a patient who was within 6 hrs of death...the last reading i took was 68/48
after that i didn't want to put her through more discomfort cause when your skin and bones and that cuff gets so tight...it really hurts...so that's the last one i had
In reference to the note above. I personally have been having issues with my blood pressure. I had been on two different medicines. After losing a rather large amount of weight in a relatively short period of time, my blood pressure medicine had not been titrated or monitored that closely. I was passing out two or three times a week for about two months before I finally went to the hospital. Upon arrival my blood pressure was 45/30. I was close to death, but still quite conscious. They pumped me full of fluid - three bags at full flow until my pressure started to stabilize more towards the normal range. That was about a week ago, and I am still here.
If your BP is over 140/90 then you are on the high side and you should get checked out by your doctor. Now if your BP was 180/110, it is considered severely high and requires treatment.
