This answer has a lot to do with personal abilities. Many people can run 1 mile quickly and that's all while other can run 3 miles at a moderate pace.

An average 15 year old boy should be able to run 1 mile in 6-9 minutes

So, to run a 5k (3.1miles) you are looking around 18-27 minutes. The 18 minutes will be if your are in relatively good fitness, run competitively and have been training.

It's not bad to be near 27 minutes. This is a good show that you have the ability to train as an endurance athlete if you are willing to practice- it is just not a competitive time if you are racing.

A superbly fit 55 year old male should be able to run under 15 minutes and 30 seconds for 5000 metres, as some have run under 15 minutes in open races. There is no physiological reason why a superbly conditioned 55 year old, (perhaps a former Olympic level athlete) with high natural lung capacity, conditioning and good biomechanics / technique cannot run near 14 minutes.

My daughter is 9 and ran a 5km road race in 21:55 April 2012 so I am not sure if the top girls run it in 19:55-21:00 by the age of 12
