I would like to piggyback on this question with some details of my own. Is there any damage that would automatically total the car? For instance if the frame is bent, but the cost of repairs would be less than the value would they still total the car? Straightening a frame would weaken it and potentially lead to more injuries and greater damage in the future.

The way car insurance works after an accident is that a report must be made to the insurance company. They will review it and then decide what you new insurance cost will be. Answer: Accidents need to be reported to your insurance company as soon as possible whether you or someone else caused the accident. Can a request be made to an accident repair shop to declare a car totaled?

Ultimately, the decision to declare a vehicle a total loss belongs to the insurance company. If the insurance company is unable to have one of their own adjusters look at the vehicle, they will usually hire an independent. The repair shop can write an estimate and take pictures, but the insurance company will decide (based on state law and their own policies) whether or not the vehicle is a total loss.
