Caterpillars have a few meathods of avoiding becoming another animals lunch A few examples are : camouflage, mimicry, and poisons. To blend in with their surroundings, some caterpillars have colors similar to their surroundings to "blend in" (this is what is known as "camouflage"). Other caterpillars look like something else, such as a twig, leaf, and even a bird feather (this is known as "mimicry")! Yet another way to avoid predators is spikes filled with poison, a bad taste, and illness such as vomiting (this is known as a "poisonous" caterpillar, which causes harm to predators that eat or touch the caterpillar; once the predator receives the effects of the toxins, it learns to avoid that kind of caterpillar, and any other caterpillar that mimics it).

They equip themselves with many protection 'devices', we will call them.

The io moth caterpillar has sharp spines connected with glands that secrete an irritating substance. Others have irritating bristles, and the swallowtail butterfly larva sends out a stinky odor.

Caterpillars defend themselves by having bristles on their body that would lodge in the skin if swallowed. They also look poisonous by nature. You can get more information about Caterpillars and their defenses at the Wikipedia.
