∙ 13y agoThe takeover of the US embassy in Tehran resulted in embarrassment for the administration of Jimmy Carter, which was already seen as weak in foreign policy. (The concurrent invasion of Afghanistan by the USSR became a covert US war because the US could not effectively oppose it diplomatically.) Carter's popularity, already hurt by domestic problems, fell and never recovered. This ultimately led to a landslide electoral victory for Ronald Reagan in 1980.
