China believes in Confucius ideaology... which is simply the belief of respecting your elders, and in return your elders will watch out for you, and look after you... Japan liked this idea of China.. and adapted it... Confucious ideology being a cultural factor hashad several influences on Japan for Example the Imperialism of Korea was mainly for cultural motives:confucious ideology.
As Japan believed as being elder, and believed they were to be respceted by Korea, in fact they made this happen, but at the same time... "looked after' Korea.. as they believed and instituted Japanese education etc.......
the Chinese writing system.
Japan adapted many things from China. The religions Buddhism and Confucianism in Japan were from the Chinese. Confucianism focuses on governance and society which interested the Japanese. Buddhism is a systematic belief system. The local Japanese religions were forced by the Chinese to define themselves related to Buddhism in some way. The Imperial Court was also adopted by the Japanese. The Japanese Imperial Court also adopted bureaucracy that is similar to Confucian principles. City- planning was also adopted by the Japanese. Japan's Shinto religion is similar to China's Daoism.
I know one of the major things China influenced Japan on was religion. China helped bring Buddhism to Japan. In fact almost the entire country is Buddhist or Shinto (A derivative from Buddhism that the Japanese formed over the years).
Its reported that China was the first Asian Country to make chopsticks. Now there's Chopsticks In japan they also brought Buddhism to japan.
Also, Japanese have influenced Chinese in many ways.
The Chinese civilization was a much older civilization than the Japanese civilization. The Chinese and the Japanese had cultural and commercial relations that date back to 200 A.D. Chinese culture flowed out of China and into Japan to influence Japanese culture in several waves. The degree to which the Japanese adopted Chinese cultural influences depended on the receptivity of the latter at that particular historical juncture. Chinese influence on Japanese culture is readily apparent.
Some of these influences are:
The Chinese were a major factor in shaping Japan's culture. As a matter of fact, kanji, the older form of written Japanese, uses Chinese characters. Both Buddhism and Confucianism were both introduced into Japan by Prince Shotoku, a devout Buddhist and one of the driving forces behind the integration of Chinese culture into the Japanese lifestyle. Buddhism, which was extremely well developed and complete, encded up taking the place of the smaller, less organized Japanese culture. Confucianism also helped shape the rules and standard procedures for a everday Japanese citizen's life. A new government system was also introduced dubbed the "Twelve Level Cap and Rank System". A system very similar to this was already being used in Sui Dynasty china.
The most obvious would be the written language - Kanji, it all comes from China.

Culture is the arts, education, attitudes, morals, and beliefs of people who live in a region. Environment can affect the culture of people and how they live by developing distinct ways of life because of limited outside sources influencing the way of life. In Ghana the people are very traditional and have limited outside influence on their culture.
Basically Japanese culture and determination for anything that stands in their way by analyzing problems and making wise decisions has put them where they are. Japan is a landlocked island, which also gave motivation to be that much better. And its closeness with China is simple, Japanese people > Chinese people in a lot of ways (mostly in military prowess and economic output), and Korea is simply a way smaller country with way less people and way less economically advanced. These are generally the reasons.
The culture is very distinct in many ways. Ways that I can not describe. But they are distinct! :D
Partly to appreciate what's special or distinctive about your own culture; partly to enrich your experience; partly to learn new ways of doing things, including thinking.
Japanese culture was blended with Chinese and Korean culture. Chinese adopted budhism from India which was later spread to Japan. Korean influence can be seen in Japanese paintings and architecture.
