They(Gates and Paul Allen) first developed BASIC, an instruction set for a very early computer platform developed at MIT. They called their company Micro-Soft. They later bought an early version of DOS (disk operating system) then started to develop it into a more user friendly operating system for IBM, which they called MS DOS. Eventually, they created Windows when PC's started to take hold in the market and they saw a need for a common operating system.
