Thomas Edison also called Al became deaf form his scarlet fever that he had a a child. There are different theories.

Some even believed of the conductor boxing his ears which claimed to be true. Edison claimed himself that he was grabbed by his ears and lifted to a train. He got deaf in one ear and 80% in the other.

When Edison was 14, he contracted scarlet fever. The effect of the fever, as well as a blow to the head by an angry train conductor, caused Edison to become completely deaf in his left ear, and 80 percent deaf in the other.
