Texas had help from the United States of America. They got very lucky, though they lost the battle of the Alamo.

Mexico's dictator, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, responded by leading an army of several thousand men north to subdue the rebellion. Santa Anna won early victories at the Alamo, a fortress built on the ruins of a Spanish mission in San Antonia, and at Goliad. But the tide of the Texas War for Independence changed when 900 Texans led by Sam Houston regrouped at the San Jacito River. There they surprised Santa Anna's troops in a battle that lasted just a matter of minutes. Victorious Texans forced Santa Anna to sign a treaty recognizing the Republic of Texas. Nine years later, in 1845, Texas was annexed, or added to the United States, becoming the twenty-eighth state.

Texas gained it's independence in 1836 by the battle of San Jacinto which lasted 18 minutes and they captured Santa Anna and forced him to sign a treaty granting Texas independence from Mexico.

When Sam Houston defeated Santa Anna at San Jacinto Santa Anna was captured and two treaty's were signed one public one and one private the public one was for Mexico to stop fighting in Texas and return home. The private one was for Santa Anna to help gain Texas's independence and with his power in Mexico he got Texas's independence in 1836.
