They don't actually stop. Alligators, crocodiles and a few other lizard species simply keep growing and don't have an "adult-size" to which they stop growing at. This is what puts them into the same category as the dinsaurs. This is why scientists say that these creatures are the last-surviving species of dinosaur.

American Alligator hatchlings are approximately 8 to 12 inches long when they emerge from their egg. Because there are so many eggs in the next (approximately 30-40) only about 10 make it to the sub-adult stage at age 1.

Many sources and researches have shown and recorded many times about the length, weight, and teeth of adult alligators.

Male alligators are bigger than female alligators by 20 percent. They can be 13 ft to 16 ft long when they are fully-grown in size, and weigh up to 1100 pounds.

Female alligators are up to 8 ft long from head to tail when they are full-grown in size, and can weigh up from 500 to 800 pounds. The big teeth of alligators can be 4 inches in span. The world record alligator was a very large male found in the marshes of Louisiana in 1890 grew to be 19.2 ft long and researchers have estimated its weight to be from 2000 pounds to 2300 pounds.
