In the 1983 NFL season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had the worst record and, therefore, the first overall selection in the 1984 NFL draft. The only problem was that they had traded their 1984 #1 selection to the Cincinnati Bengals for QB Jack Thompson in 1983. This meant the Bengals had the #1 overall selection and they wound up trading that selection to the New England Patriots for two #1s (#s 16 and 28 overall) in the 1984 draft.
The Patriots selected WR Irving Fryar #1 overall and the Bengals selected DE Pete Koch with the 16th selection and OT Brian Blados with the #28 selection. Fryar played 17 seasons in the NFL, 9 with the Patriots. Blados played 9 seasons in the NFL, 7 1/2 with the Bengals and Koch played 5 seasons in the NFL, 1 with the Bengals.
There have been several occasions where the #1 overall selection was traded shortly after being selected. The last time this happened was 2004 when the Chargers selected QB Eli Manning #1 overall the Giants selected Philip Rivers with the #4 overall. Manning had indicated that he would not play for the Chargers so the Chargers made a deal with the Giants, who coveted Manning, trading Eli for Rivers, the Giants #3 in the 2004 draft, and the Giants #1 in the 2005 NFL draft. With those two extra selections, the Chargers took K Nate Kaeding and LB Shawne Merriman.
When the Baltimore Colts selected QB John Elway with the #1 overall selection in 1983, Elway indicated he would not play with the Colts and would pursue a baseball career. The Colts traded him to the Broncos for QB Mark Herrmann, the rights to the Broncos 1st selection in the 1983 draft, OT Chris Hinton, and the Broncos #1 in the 1984 draft.
Syracuse RB Ernie Davis was the 1st overall selection in the 1962 NFL draft, taken by the Washington Redskins. The Redskins quickly traded him to the Browns for future Hall of Famer Bobby Mitchell. Tragically, Davis never played a game in the NFL as he was diagnosed with leukemia shortly after the trade and passed away in May, 1963.
