On Thursday, May 6, 1937, the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg attempted to dock with its mooring mast at the Lakehurst Naval Air Station, New Jersey, with 97 passengers aboard, when it caught fire and was destroyed. As a result of the incident, 35 passengers were killed and one person on the ground.
