Arkansas governor Faubus refused to enforce the Suprme Court decison of Brown vs. Brown desegragating schools. Faubus sent the National Guard to Little Rock to block the entrance for 9 black high school kids. The next day Eisenhower sent the 101st Airborne contingency and the President Nationalized the Arkansas Guard. The kids entered Central High School under federal protection, and the states understood Eisenhower would intervene if they didn't enforce the Court's ruling. The Arkansas National Guard refused to escort the Little Rock Nine, those children who tried to attend a white school and were being attacked, so Eisenhower asserted his presidential powers to order them to do their job. The Governor of Arkansas at the time was a segregationist and would not order the Arkansas National Guard to help in the attacks.
Eisenhower put the Arkansas National Guard under Army command in front of schools in Little Rock during the effort to desegregate schools to keep the guard from being led by the governor of Arkansas and to prevent violence.

Winston Churchill; General Dwight D. Eisenhower.
President Eisenhower did not agree with the decision of the Supreme Court in Brown vs Board of Education that educational institutions in the South were unequal and segregation hurt students who did not get an "equal" education. He felt the decision was a mistake. But, as President he was sworn to uphold the law and enforce the law. Eisenhower was a constitutionalist and to him, the Court's ruling had the force of law. Governor Faubus of Arkansas was defying the Court's order so Eisenhower took over command of the National Guard and ordered troops to enforce the integration of Central High School.
