Mcdonalds absolutely takes American Express. I just used my card there tonight. Most major business's and chain stores do, smaller/family owned companies just don't seem to accept them probably due to lack of funds I think amex has higher interest fees or something.

Edit from statement above: I just got back from mcdonalds where I live and they told me they accept amex. I think it depends on the franchise, whether or not they support amex or not. All credit cards? No they do not take JCB, Maestro, etc. just the bigger brand names.
