In 1959, Singapore was granted Self-Government status, which means Singapore could form it's own government to govern the internal running of the country, but was still defended by the British and came under their authority for external matters like international trade and military matters.

Then in 1963, Singapore merged with Malaya to form Malaysia and thus broke away from British rule totally.

Independence came only in 1965, when Singapore broke away from Malaysia to become an independent island nation.
