Hi, I used Optimum Relaxer regularly on my hair for the last half of my life (ages 14-27). Though I recently (6 months ago) switched from Optimum relaxer to a texturizer, I have continued to use the same ordinary conditioning shampoo I have used for most of the last 10 years. It is "Cream of Nature Detangling Conditioning Shampoo". Out of scores of shampoos I have tried over my teens and through my twenties, Cream of Nature Detangling Conditioning Shampoo is the BEST shampoo for relaxed hair, texturized hair, color treated, or just super dry/damaged hair. It basically has some conditioner built into it, and when you rinse it out, it leaves your hair feeling as if it has been deep conditioned. You can even run a fine tooth comb through your hair with little or no hair coming off because the shampoo has detangled and conditioned it so well. The Cream of Nature Detangling Conditioning Shampoo comes in normal (red bottle), ultra moisturizing (green bottle- my favourite), and fine hair (blue bottle). Does regular shampoo work on your hair after a relaxer?
No. You need to purchase a neutralizing shampoo which are designed to stop the relaxer from processing. You also may need to consider using the same brand of neutralizing shampoo that was made by the relaxer manufacturer. If not any neutralizing shampoo should help but it is recommended that you use the same brand of products for chemical services.

No u MUST use some type of neutralizing shampoo to rinse the relaxer chemical out of your hair. After that you can use whatever kind of shampoo you would like.

There is a certain amount of time each should be left on, then should be immediately rinsed and shampooed out. Normally with a perm you shampoo and rinse the hair first and with a relaxer you apply it to dry hair and new growth only, then shampoo with a neutralizer and rinse. You also may need to repeat the shampoo process more than once to make sure everything is removed and for your hair to take the new straight or curly shape, this process is called rebonding. If applied properly your hair should be in optimum condition.

yes African American people wash their hair like other people, only once a week if you have a relaxer though. Those who choose to go or stay natural, meaning w/o a relaxer, can wash everyday only with conditioner though. Chemicals in the shampoo can strip the hair, making it dry and brittle.

I would suggest shampoo and conditioner that will strengthen and thicken your hair. It's available in almost every store!
Should you perm your hair before braiding in hair extensions?
This depends on you and your hair type. Really there isn't a reason to relax your hair before getting braids and extensions. This can damage your scalp because your hair will be very soft after you have applied a relaxer. Your hair should be handled gently after a relaxer has been applied. Your hair is very soft and will break easily if you decide to stretch it in braiding. I would just shampoo and deep condition it really well and apply a relaxer about 3 weeks to a month after that to avoid any breakage.
