E.g, hypothetically, if your blood was bright blue it wouldn't matter so long as it worked the same way as normal blood. However, normal blood is red due to the haemoglobin content, which means that blood a colour other than red would be seriously lacking in haemoglobin, making the person very unwell. This would mean that the cause of the blue blood would have to be investigated, since it would be a symtom of something else.
