My son's father needed a notarized letter with detailed information about the money he gives to me for the military. For him to get separation pay for our son, this letter served as proof that he does take care of him. As long as it was notarized he didn't need court documentation.

Does a father have to pay for things other than child support?

Rule One: You must make all your court ordered child support payments or you will be in contempt of a court order. If you "gave extra money" and have proof in the form of a cancelled check, it may or may not be counted against future payments. It may be considered a gift. It would be up to the court to decide.

What are the consequences for a father who doesn't pay child support?

Laws differ between states. If the support is court ordered, then he can lose his drivers license and/or be put in jail. He MUST pay the court ordered amount and if he doesn't make enough, he needs to get another job. Most states can attach his wages. Remarriage has no bearing on child support. If the father was paying you directly, the payments will, of course, cease. If this is the case you must contact the state for assistance. If you were receiving the support payment from the state, then nothing will change and his payments to reimburse the state will become an obligation/lien against him for which he will eventually have to pay the state back.
