A dog certainly knows when something is different and some will react to this. If a black family has a dog and a white person enters their home the dog may well growl at them or, perhaps (depending on the breed) greet them and this applies in reverse. Dogs also listen to commands in the language of their masters.
When a person of color comes into my home and my one dog (a Cockapoo x) will bark. I put my hand flat on his face and say 'no!' I make him lay on his cushion. He listens well to commands, but will often let out low growls or yodeling sounds. I am a huggy person with family and friends and so I allow my dog to see that I am accepting this person into our home. It works!
It's not about race, but differences in a person. Dogs know when someone is different and react in their own way. My little Cockapoo was always verbal and barking at my Asian girlfriend and she would laugh her head off. It took only two weeks of her coming around approximately 4 times and my dog now won't leave her alone and loves to see her.
