I just had the same thing happen to me and I called the PUR line listed on the box. The representative told me that the water is a result of the pasteurization process that the filter goes through to kill microbes and that I could rinse the filter per the instructions on the box and then use it. That's the answer I got, but if you are still concerned call the 1-800 number on the box and ask :-)

The most popular water system is Brita. You can buy filters that attach you your faucet, or ones that come in a freestanding pitcher, which is filled up from the tap.

What is it that water can pass easily through its holes but solid particles cannot?

Filters allow passage of water but not solid particles. Simple fabric/carbon water filters that attach to a faucet or are part of a sink-side filtering pitcher are examples. But there are also filters called reverse osmosis filters, part of an RO system, that block not only solid particles but also bacteria, microorganisms, and even single molecules of the heavier organics. The RO filter, with pores on the order of two ten-millionths of an inch, can even block dissolved impurities, such as mineral salts, even though they may be smaller than the water molecules themselves.

Why are Pitcher-plants called Pitcher-plants?

Pitcher plants are called pitcher plants because they have 'pitchers' at the ends of their stems. The pitcher has digestive fluid in it with a sweet smell that attracts insects. The insects fly/crawl in and get trapped inside when the pitcher plant closes. They are then digested in the fluids in the "pitcher". Pitcher as in a jug or cup, not as in baseball pitcher but I think you knew that.

Can animals help reproduct pitcher plants?

Designer Water from Your Fridge?

The availability of refrigerator water filters gives everyone access to delicious water without the steep price of designer water. Buying a refrigerator with a built-in water filter allows you to keep the finest water at your disposal all the time, free of charge. Water filtering pitchers are an inexpensive option that work with existing refrigerators and give older fridge owners the same access to clean, filtered water. Many manufacturers offer built-in water filters for water and ice dispensers in their refrigerators. Some manufacturers offer units which use filtered water for the ice maker as well as for the dispensed water. Manufacturers currently offering built-in water filters include: Maytag, Amana, Whirlpool, GE, Hotpoint, Jenn-Air, Kenmore, KitchenAid and LG. These water filters are a step up in the refrigerator world, taking the water and ice dispenser to the next level of convenience and usefulness. The filters used in these refrigerators must be changed periodically, so the manufacturers also sell replacement filters. These are often packaged in economy packs of 3 or 6 filters. Some manufacturers also offer a subscription service, where they will automatically send you replacement filters at appropriately scheduled intervals. You sign up for the service and put a payment option on file with the company, then you will be automatically billed when your filters are sent. No fuss, no keeping up with schedules and no hassles locating the filters you need. In addition to built-in water filters, there are several water filtering pitchers which may be used in any refrigerator. Like the built-in water filters, these pitchers use removable filters which must be replaced at intervals. Manufacturers offering water filtering pitchers include Pur, Brita, Clear2O and Zero. The advantage of a water filtering pitcher is that it can be used without the expense of replacing your existing fridge. The disadvantage is that, unlike a built-in refrigerator water filter, it needs manual refilling. Whether you upgrade your current refrigerator to one with a built-in water filter or simply purchase a water-filtering pitcher for your existing fridge, remarkably clean and delicious water will be at your fingertips. Say good-bye to expensive bottled water and hello to designer water straight from your fridge.
