Essentially, yes, koalas are nocturnal. While they do sleep or are inactive up to 20 hours of the day, their waking times are primarily between the hours of 7pm and 7am. This is when they can be heard having territorial disputes.

They can on occasion, however, be observed moving about during the daytime as well. In certain parts of Australia, koalas have been known to stop traffic when they have attempted to cross the road during peak hour times.

Koalas are marsupials, and most marsupial species are nocturnal, meaning they sleep during the day and are active at night. Although Australia has few natural predators of the koala, the fact that they are nocturnal is still an adaptation to avoid predators, such as Birds of Prey.

"Koalas are nocturnal" means that koalas are active at night, and sleep during the day. The opposite of nocturnal is diurnal, meaning active during the day.

Koalas, like almost all marsupials, are nocturnal because this is an adaptation that helps them avoid diurnal predators such as birds of prey and pythons.

Koalas are nocturnal, so they spend their nights feeding, moving between trees in their home range and, engaging in territorial behaviour and, during breeding season, mating.

Are kolalas at the San Diego zoo?

Yes, but because koalas sleep for most of the day and are chiefly nocturnal, you can usually only see them at night. They even have an albino koala, Onya-Birri (meang "ghost boy" in the language of the Aborigines") who is currently the world's only captive albino koala (but not the world's first; The San Diego Zoo used to have an albino koala named Goolara, who died of cancer; Goolara's grandfather, Kalba, was also an albino).

Where do koalas sleep all day?

Yes. Koalas are nocturnal, meaning they sleep during the day. A koala may spend between 16 and 20 hours asleep each day, but it is more active at night. This is not to say that they do not move around during the day - a koala trying to cross a busy road in daylight is not an unusual sight in bushland areas of Australia.
