No there were never any one-eyed giants roaming the Earth. The idea probably came from the first time ancient people saw the skull of an elephant. Because the trunk has no bones, and its eyes are placed on the sides of its head rather than in front, the ancient people only saw a gigantic skull with a single hole in the middle of it, which they assumed was for an eye.
