Panther is a term used to describe many species of large cat and not all of the are black. The cat families that are known as panthers, where they can be found and their colourings are:

• Cougar - Plain sandy brown colour, some slightly spotted, some mottled, others dark brown or black. They are found in North America.
• Jaguar - Golden colour with black or dark brown spots. These are found in South and Central America.
• Leopard - Yellow golden colour with small dark spots. This animal is found in Africa and Asia.
• Black Panther - Black or mottled brown colouring. Normally found in south western China, Myanmar, Assam, Nepal Southern India and to a less extent Africa.

note:the Black Panther of Asia and Africa is only a melanistic leopard.there is no species"black panther".

a tiger - panthera tigris

a leopard - panthera pardus

a jaguar - panthera onca

a snow leopard - panthera uncia

The only species of panther that produce an occasional melanistic (black) individual are the leopard and the jaguar. Collectively they are called black panthers.
