mine whines a different noise in every gear, but it will not whine when i push in the clutch, so i changed my slave cylinder and clutch and the whining noise stopped.

I believe this was a short-sighted attempt at increasing fuel efficiency ( lowering gearbox friction ). I have used SAE80 gear oil ever since in these gearboxes ( 1978 and 1889 trucks) with no further problems. Auto Transmission Fluid has no business in these gearboxes. That's a quote from the guy that had to rebuild my '78 gearbox.
