Check the wires/cables. Are they plugged completely/correctly into the back of the printer/computer and wall? Check for the program. Has the setup been installed correctly into the computer? To check this, click on your 'Start button'; now find 'Control Panel' and click that. This will bring up a window, look for one on here similar to 'Programs and Features' or 'Add/Uninstall Programs'. Click twice on that and you will see a list of all of the programs that are loaded into your computer. Search for your printer name. If the printer is on the list then close all of your windows and reinstall the printer disk. Maybe it was not installed completely.

How does the printer communicate with the CPU?

What is often called a printer is simply an output device. The computer communicates with the firmware called printer drivers in the computer. The driver makes the connection with the printing output device.

What software do printers need?

Printers use printer drivers which are specifically written for each printer model to communicate with computers. I.E. if the printer is a print, copy, scan, the driver must be able to handle all the functions of that printer.

Can a computer have more than one printer installed in it and explain?

Yes because it is upgradable. yOU NEED TO SHARE THE PRINTER. Most computers today have several Universal Serial Bus inputs, and each one is capable of supporting a different printer. However, the printer drivers must be installed on the computer, so that the computer can communicate with the printer. These drivers are contained in the installation disc which comes with the printer, or can be downloaded from the manufacturers website. Older computers had a parallel port to drive printers, and could only operate one printer. A 'shared' printer is one which is accessible from the local are network, which allows a user on a computer which is not directly connected to the printer to use that printer.

Does a printer driver reside on the computer or the printer?

The printer driver resides on the computer. It is the software that tells the computer how to talk to the printer.

How does your computer know how much ink is in your printer cartridges?

Printers are able to communicate back to your computer nearly the exact amount of ink remaining in one or all of your cartridges. They know this because when ink starts to get low you may notice papers being lighter colored or not as thick of ink. The printer is trying to save ink by doing this. Also once a certain color runs out based on if you have a newer or older printer the printer will try to mix ink colors to create the color you requested if it had ran out.

What are small programs stored on the hard drive that tells the computer how to communicate with specific hardware device such as printer network card or modem?

How Does a Printer Driver Do?

One of the important things to running a printer is not actually the printer itself. It is a software application often referred to as the printer driver. The printer driver is in fact the piece of software that allows a printer to communicate with a computer. Without the driver, the computer will not be able to send printing instructions to the printer. This driver software acts as an intermediary. When you press print on a program on your computer, it is the driver that is able to convert this information into a format that the printer is able to understand. The printer then receives this information from the driver through a link between the printer and computer either via a physical wire or through a network. It then prints the pages as instructed. A printer driver, however, will not work for every single computer-printer setup. All different brands and models of printers have their own specific driver software that is usually incompatible with other printers. In fact, most printer drivers use specific computer languages to prevent them from working with other brands. Each driver is also operating system specific. For example, a driver designed for Windows will not work on a Mac. The printer driver will also perform functions other than converting data. It can give commands that determine how the printer operates. For example, a driver can help set a printers margins, determine pagination, and complete a number of other tasks that allow a printer to operate as expected. The driver will also likely be designed to deliver messages from the printer back to the computer. For example, if the level of ink in the printers cartridges is low, the driver will allow the printer to alert the user of that computer of that fact. The driver should also be able to alert that user or any errors that occur during the printing process. Despite the incompatibility of printer drivers with printers they were not designed for, many operating systems such as Windows come with a number of printer drivers from different manufactures preinstalled. If one hooks up a printer related to one of theses drivers, that user should be able to start printing right away without having to install any new software.
