If you have a placenta that is in the lower part of the uterus, there is a serious risk of haemorrhage either before labour or, most certainly, during it. It is a risk both to a mother's life and the baby's if not medically managed.
However, placentas that appear low at this stage of pregnancy often do not remain low as the uterus grows. Further ultrasounds should be done at least by the 30 week mark to see if this has happened. If so, delivery will be as normal. If not, the doctor may decide to hospitalize the mother so she is near medical care if bleeding should occur, and the baby is almost always delivered by caesarean section, sometimes before the due date to avoid the hazard of a spontaneous labour. The cervix may be completely or partially blocked by the placenta, or if low-lying can be damaged during a normal labour, or even be born before the baby, which is fatal.
