ANSWER Check the starter fuse under the hood. A very small fuse in the fuse box. I think it's a 20 amp.The design is such that almost asks that fuse to blow intermittently. ANSWER If the starter fuse has blown, the starter is going bad and should be replaced.

I had the same problem. Everytime I would turn the ignition past Accesory to the On position the 20A fuse would pop. I went through 15 or so fuses. I could get it to start every now and then, so one time it started I drove it up to Sears Auto and they diagnosed the Battery as having a bad cell. Replaced the battery and haven't pop a fuse since then. Popping the 20A ignition fuse....have your battery tested and probably replaced! check the starter too if battery is good I had this problem as well. It turned out to be the starter. It occurs when you move to "start" and the starter fails to engage. Whether this was simply a bad solenoid, or something else in the starter, I can't say for sure. In short, if the engine didn't immediately turn, the fuse would blow in about 2 seconds. I got around it for quite a while by being very careful to not hold the switch in start unless I detected the engine turning over. Eventually the starter ws relaced and all is well.

what size fuse is it it would need to be a 30 amp fuse for the starter solenoid after that your starter solenoid could be shorting if you take the wire that comes from the key off the starter (normally the small wire on its own going onto the solenoid on top of the starter)then turn the key same as if you were starting the engine if the fuse doesn't blow then you need a new solenoid for the starter or a new starter if the price is right if the fuse does blow with the wire off the solenoid then you have a short in the wiring loom check the loom for break or cracks there is a good chance the wire is after wearing against the engine somewhere if this is the case tape it over and tie it back from the engine
