I conducted an experiment whereby I grew mung-beans in different solutions. Most solutions had a success rate ranging from 65-80%. However the solution with salt added had a 0-1% success rate. So to answer your question, 'YES', mung-beans Do grow in salt water.

Mung beans require a low salt concentration. The lower the salt concentration the more water that is pulled in and this causes the bean to expand. The higher the salt concentration more water is drawn from the bean.

Mung beans don't grow in salt water because the salt is an impurity and causes the plant to absorb less water. It also makes the plant dry out.

The salinity of the salt makes it difficult for any seed to germinate and also affects imbibition. It is also true that salt may affect elongation of plant roots.
