Pain is due to severe isometric relaxation of skeletal muscles. This is proved by many facts.

1. We don't feel pain where there are no skeletal muscleslike the thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic cavities and with in the skull.

2. Even when there is a problem in the internal organs the pain is felt in the skeletal muscles only. Thus abnormally severe contraction of intestine during dysentery results in pain in the muscles around the navel. The excruciating pain of heart attack is felt in the middle of the chest, even though the heart is in the left side.

3. In severe paralysis of limbs there would be excruciation pain in these, which is promptly relieved if the tone is reset to the normal 50% level.

4. Pain abolishes movements because the low skeletal muscle tone associated with it will not be sufficient to execute a movement.

5. Any pain can be relieved by increasing the tone of skeletal muscles in the area.

6. We can tolerate pain. We do this by increasing the tone of the skeletal muscles there. We can train ourselves to tolerate more and more pains.

These facts prove that pain is due to abnormally severe isometric relaxation of skeletal muscles.

Ache is due to abnormally severe isometric contraction of skeletal muscles.

I am not a doctor but I can give you a simple and short answer to this question that I find has infinite knowledge behind it. Pain is the way your body tells you something is wrong. Pain tells you something is not functioning properly, or is being infected or is being blocked by something. There are many causes for pain but usually something is happening inside your body that should not be happening. If you want the specific mechinations of how pain travels you will have to ask a more specific question possibly geared towards doctors.

Pain is a signal from the brain to alert humans they have something wrong somewhere that needs attention right away. Paralytic people have to have others inspect their skin, muscles, bones, limbs, feet and hands constantly to look for obvious places that could be wounded or sick.

Imagine not feeling a heart attack. You would not know your most important organ was not working and you could die if you did not get medical care immediately.

Imagine not feeling a burn, cut, bruise, or fracture. You could get a serious infection or lose your life.

Pain actually does not exist. It forms entirely in the brain. The Brain sends messages through the CNS (Central Nervous System) and travels throughout the body to direct area where pain should be applied. Our brain does this because its trying to tell us that this hurts and we shouldn't be doing this, or touching this, or what ever triggered the pain. The amount pain we feel, tells us the amount of danger our body is in when we feel the pain. The higher amount of pain, the higher amount of danger our body is in. There are few cases where humans suffer a rare genetic disorder, in which they cannot feel pain. CIP(Congenital Insensitivity to Pain) is a disorder where a person cannot feel pain. CIP can also lead to CIPA(Congenital Insensitivity to Pain with Anhidrosis) where the body cannot feel pain and it cannot perspire (sweat). CIPAalmost rarely ever developes from CIP but there has been cases. CIPA developes when a person has no control over their autonomic nervous system -- which controls blood pressure, heart rate, sweating, the sensory nerve system and the ability to feel pain and temperature. These genetic diseases seldom happen and are extremely rare.

Nerves in our body sense pain. The nerves pass along the message to our brain and we understand we are in pain.
