The simple reason is that more were needed to meet demand. Each Federal Reserve district keeps tabs on the supply of all denominations of currency and orders more when needed.

$2 bills don't circulate widely, but they are used in some parts of the country. Demand has also increased slightly due to inflation, especially where transit fares are concerned because it's easier to put 1 bill in a farebox than two separate ones.
