In the past controlling the lands was key to victory. Then controlling the seas was key to victory. Then controlling the sky was the key to victory. After the ATOMIC AGE came in 1945...controlling outer space became the new key for obtaining victory.

The fact that the Soviets were the first to send up a satellite, and later a man up into space, was a demoralizing blow to the US. All sides had demanded their peoples to put more effort, than ever before into the space race, even if it was dangerous to do so

The Cold War, was the reason that the United States and the Soviet Union competed. As both were the world's military, industrial and overall superpowers. Both superpowers wanted to prove that they were better than each other. The Soviets were somewhat more skilled, and were beating the United States by sending Yuri Gagarin, the first man into space. The space race, was a one of the Cold War's defining moments. But the United States, won the end by sending the first man on the moon.
