The Colosseum was built by draining a lake at the entrance of the massive Golden House of Nero. The core was made of Roman concrete (which was different than modern concrete) which was covered by travertine tone. The Romans always covered concrete with a face in stone or brick because concrete was unsightly. Some areas were covered with marble or stucco (a type of plaster). Three rows of 80 barrel (simple) arches with columns at their sides were built for the outer facade for the first three tiers of the building. The arches on the ground level acted as entrances/exits. The fourth trier was walled as had 40 windows. The stones of the facade were held together by bronze brackets. The massive seating and its tiers were supported by vaulted arches. The lower steps were made of marble and the higher ones were made of wood.

Below the floor of the arena there were 12 corridors arranged symmetrically around the two sides. This area hosted the machinery and the animals used for the games. At the two opposite ends there were two monumental entrances for the gladiators and animals which were too heavy to be hoisted from below the arena. The arena could be flooded for mock naval battles. After a fight the arena was covered with sand to soak up the blood.

The Coliseum (or Colosseum, both spellings are correct), which not many people know is actually called the Flavian Amphitheatre (Amphitheatrum Flavium), sits in the city centre of Rome, in Italy.

It is one of the most famous buildings in the world because it shows revolutionary architecture - It's huge and round - which many thought to be impossible during the times before the Roman Empire.

The structure is actually in the dead-centre of Rome, which also shows how amazingly accurate Roman architects were.
