Victoria was named after Queen Victoria of Britain.

At the time when Victoria separated from New South Wales, the colonies of Australia were still under British rule. Queen Victoria was the reigning monarch of the time, so it was prudent to honour her by naming a state after her.

Victoria was originally part of New South Wales, which encompassed the entire eastern half of the Australian mainland. When first settled, the main settlement in what was then southern New South Wales was simply the Port Phillip colony.
