The above user got it pretty perfect, just one other major
factor to consider why it was filmed there...
They created a whole myth like story behind the way
that the then aspiring director, Peter Jackson, had
approached the relevant people and presented them
with a viable option to make it down under, and that
if it wasn't for his ingenuity and innovation the
project might have never got off the ground or at
least if the film was made it would have been
done in Another Country, etc etc.. actually he
was knighted by the Queen for his services to NZ
and because of the effect this had on our economy,
international recognition, Tourism etc..
Whether this too was all fiction and the movie
powers that be actually did the reverse and looked
to a local in an offshore bid to film this project
in a way that afforded it the greatest hype ever,
just shrouded in mystery, giving a history to the
making of the epic itself, may hold some merit too.
This history too though has become legend back home.
And legend becomes myth...
Peter Jackson was born near Wellington, New Zealand, and lives there with his wife and family. As well as direction, he is involved with the special effects company Weta Digital, and the production company Wingnut Films and Stone Street Studios, all of which are also based in New Zealand. The landscape in New Zealand has also been particularly suited to his films, famously in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy where it is translated into sweeping Middle Earth locations.
It wasn't filmed in New Zealand. The films were all made in England and surrounding countries. No parts were filmed in New Zealand.
