In the book of Matthew chapter 4 it says that Jesus had gone to the wilderness and the devil had taken Jesus up the holy city (Jerusalem) and had setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple. Pinnacle means highest part of a monomental building or temple. So, that's where Satan told Jesus to jump from. Hope this helps.

AnswerThe gospels say that Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness. This was first written in Mark's Gospel around 70 CE, at a time when many Christian doctrines had not yet been formulated. We can not be sure whether the author of Mark saw Satan as the Judaic loyal assistant of God, as portrayed in the Book of Job, or as the adversary of God, as he was to become in later Christianity.

If Mark saw Satan in the Judaic perspective, then Satan tempted Jesus to test his righteousness and prove him worthy of his role. If Mark saw Satan in what would become the Christian perspective, then Satan tempted Jesus to corrupt him and divert him from his mission.

After Christ has fasted for forty days and nights, Satan knew that He was weak and at a low ebb. Satan tempted Christ with a number of temtations but the worst was that Christ should worship him, Satan. If he did so Satan would have him all that lay before him. Christ said to him, "That only God would He worship" and Satan left in anger. Christ was administered to by angels.

There is no suggestion in the story of the temptation in the wilderness that Satan wanted to kill Jesus, although the later synoptic gospels (Matthew and Luke) say he might have wanted Jesus to worship him and thereby destroy the mission of Jesus.

The role of Satan, as perceived by the early Christians, might have evolved over time, in the gospels. In the earliest gospel, Mark, Satan arguably is portrayed in the Jewish manner, as the loyal assistant of God who tempts Jesus to prove his righteousness and thus his ability to fulfil the mission he was given. All the while, angels ministered to Jesus. In the last New Testament gospel, John, there is no mention of the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness, and Satan is definitely now the evil adversary of God, as perceived by modern Christians.

Jesus' successful completion of that "temptation" defeated Satan... and qualified Him, as King of kings and Lord of lords, to depose Satan and his rule on earth. It wasn't until afterward that Jesus began to preach the "good news of the coming Kingdom of God," now that He had just become its King, and His active "earthly ministry" began.

The fulfillment of the prophesied Kingdom of God on earth had, at long last, begun to take shape with the defeat of the "ruler of the old regime" under the world's present god.

"...He was in the desert forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended Him. AfterJohn was put in prison [and the temptation successfully completed], Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 'The time has come,' He said. 'The Kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!'" (Mark 1:13-15 NIV)

Jesus accomplished what Adam and Eve failed to do in the beginning... He successfully: "stood against the wiles of the Devil" [Eph.6:11], by quoting the Words of God, to squelch all of Satan's arguments and deceptions.

Satan's twisting of God's Words in the Garden of Eden didn't end well for Adam and Eve [and all the succeeding generations of their children]. But, his twisting of scripture in the wilderness was met with the correction and rebuke [II Tim.3:16] of the Righteous Truth of God.

Without Satan's defeat... and a new King to replace his errant rule on earth... mankind would remain without salvation, redemption... and the opportunity to be purchased from his slave-master, Satan, to whom Adam and Eve had sold them in the beginning.

Answer

While the above answer works, to an extent, it's over looking a couple of REALLY crucial things.

First, that Jesus' temptation was not unique. Jesus, while (arguably) the son of God, he was born a man and ALL men (and women) have to be tried. Job did a far better job and had to endure much worse when it comes to "standing against the wiles of the Devil". Jesus got off relatively lucky (and yes, I am taking the crucifixion into account). And in fact, ultimately, Jesus FAILED his test, crying out on the cross "Father, why hast thou abandoned me?" He reached the edge of his breaking point and did not endure.

Secondly, he HAD to fail. While it is more apocryphal than canonical, only by failing and being condemned to Hell could Jesus show that it could be escaped, helping lead the way for those who had died before him. Because, contrary to the the teachings of Paul who butchered much of the last half of the New Testament, Hell is not necessarily eternal. It is a place of penance and lasts only as long as is necessary before purity is restored- This is why Jesus referred to Hell as Gehenna, a trash heap outside of Jerusalem that was regularly burned and then salvaged from not the eternal pit of pain and torment that some Christians like to wish upon their enemies.

Third, Satan is a tempter, nothing more. He cannot lift so much as a finger against a blade of grass, let alone cause anyone to sin or cause any sort of injury. Satan exists to test our purity, just as he did Job and just as he did Christ- He is working in accordance with God's plan, not against it. And Jesus had to demonstrate his own willingness to act in accordance with God's will rather than his own. There was no need to "over throw" Satan, or his control of the earth because he has none. Evil is created by man alone and we must take responsibility for it, not try to point the finger elsewhere.

Did Satan ever try to tempt Jesus again?

Answer:Yes he did, while in a desert the Satan was waiting for him he tried to tempt him to prove he was the Lord, disobey God, etc. Nevertheless he failed.Answer:Yes, many times... but these were more subtle and indirect.Much of the time Satan tempted Him through the Pharisees and other leaders and judges among the Jews who constantly tried to trap Him or trip Him up, but:"...Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why temptMe, ye hypocrites?" (Matt.22:18)"...He, knowing their hypocrisy, said unto them, Why tempt Me?" (Mark 12:15)Then, there is the famous rebuke of Peter, who foolishly assayed to dissuade Him from His imminent crucifixion:"...He (Jesus) turned, and said unto Peter, GET THEE BEHIND ME, SATAN: thou art an offence unto Me..." (Matt.16:23).Jesus was in a constant state of "overcoming" the temptations of Satan... as well as the natural pulls of the flesh.

How could Jesus be tempted 3 times yet it Says after Satan tempted Him in All things he departed?

1) Satan said to Jesus, who was fasting, if you are hungry, turn the bread into stones. Jesus said man does not live by bread alone, but, by every word that comes from God. 2) Satan said to Jesus, why not throw yourself off a cliff and see if the angels will catch you? Jesus said not to put God to the test and force God to save you. 3) Satan then said that if Jesus were to worship him (the devil), then the devil would give all the kingdoms on Earth to rule. Jesus said, thou shall worship the Lord God, and no other than the Lord God. With that, the devil, Satan, departed. Jesus refused to do what the devil said, and the devil gave up trying to tempt Jesus.
