I believe you are asking why chickens should not always be kept under close confinement indoors. After all, many of us home-flock owners DO keep our flocks in one "room" or pen. I have one "room" for my current flock, and another pen for my growing flock. Many people do not like to mix young birds with the mature flock, not only for fear of the older birds pecking the younger (there is always a literal "pecking order") but also so that the young birds will not contract any potential diseases from the older birds.

But, again, I think you're referring to chickens being kept in woefully over-crowded conditions indoors, such as caged laying-hens. Chickens are not the smartest animals in the world, but even they had a certain amount of intelligence. They can be surprisingly curious, and they have strong instincts. They like to take dust baths, scratch, peck, and hunt for bugs and seeds. Hens like to seek out secluded places to lay eggs. I'm not sure if any studies have been done, but most people feel that animals are "happier" (if we can use that term) if they are allowed to follow at least some of their natural instincts. Certainly chicks and chickens in too-overcrowded conditions often peck at one another...causing sores and even death. For that reason, they are de-beaked while chicks. Then, too, overcrowding can lead to coccidiosis and other diseases/parasites, so the chickens have to be fed antibiotics. Many people feel that it is inherently inhumane to confine a chicken (or any animal) to a small cage for its productive life.

On the other side of the coin, however, allowing commercial chickens outdoors CAN cause certain problems. Chickens may be infected with diseases from wild birds or killed by predators, but they do not have the problems that closely-confined birds exhibit. Commercial growers have to balance true "free range" (which means that the chicken may be anywhere from on to top of your truck to roosting on a branch in a pine tree) with humane care and financial concerns.

Why are battery chickens called battery chickens?

They are called battery chickens because they have been reared and kept in cages - normally a battery farm will consist of row after row of small cages which hardly give the hens room to move but do leave them enough room to eat and lay eggs. Why is it called a battery? Well, a 'battery of something' can be used as a way to describe a large number of that something all in one place.. . as in artillery battery, an organized group of artillery pieces, or in chess, where a battery is a tactic consisting of placing two or more pieces on the same rank, file, or diagonal. In the case of battery hens, they've been kept in one of a battery of cages.

Chickens in large pens, with room to move around to do what chicken do, will always be happier than a chicken in a small cage. However, free-ranging chickens are undoubtable the happiest. Think about yourself, would you like being in a small cage with no room to move or stretch?
