Why not burn paper?

Because it takes some time for the burner to light, and in this time, paper would burn down and away from the gas at the top of the barrel. A splint will only smoulder near the barrel, for more than long enough.

It depends. If you burn it, it doesn't go to the land fill but it does pollute the air. It might not be bad to throw away the trash if you know the ladfills in your area uses trash gas (methane) to burn, boil water and make energy.

First of all, you don't have to, there's plenty of other stuff that can be used instead.

But in order to get a fire going, you want to start with something that'll catch fire easily, yet burn long enough to get the logs, or the bigger pieces of fuel to light over.

And paper just fits that bill.

It'll light easily enough, yet keep burning long enough to get some bigger pieces to catch fire.

And it's easy to handle, as opposed to combustible liquids you can't spill it and it's not toxic.

Because it causes air pollution and also uses up the resources of our trees.
