There could be many reasons why children need to work. They could be bored out of their minds and need to find something to do. They may need to help out with the family bills or raise money to go on school trips. The child's family may not be rich and have extra money to spend of entertainment, so the child might have to fend for himself or herself. They might have broken an item at a store and need to work there to pay it off. At 16 children can drive and they might need to pay for car related issues. All in all they work for the money or for helping others out.

Children are often forced or sold into labor by their parents or guardians to prevent financial ruin. Few choose for themselves. But those who do often do so in a self sacrificial role for the protection of their families. Poverty begets desperation, desperation begets the evils of child labor, theft, and prostitution among others.

Some parents arrange for their children to work, because they want the extra income that their children will earn. This usually happens in very poor families where the need for money is desperate.
