Why is your 1998 jeep Cherokee throwing the serpentine belt off?

Well.......... There is an item that is called a Harmonic Balancer. Can be a pain in the butt! I replaced mine in my 1999 Jeep sport. I guess now that I have done it I guess I would replace one again. You can get a loaner tool to pull it out from most auto parts stores. A day and some patence..... I did it. NO - is this a GRAND Cherokee or XJ? What engine does it have? smoth side of belt, to smooth pullies, groved side to groved pullies. Only the right belt will fit. Hope you gave the parts store more info than us or chances are, you have the wrong belt.
