Easter Rabbit and Eggs: The symbols of the Norse Goddess Ostara were the hare and the egg. Both represented fertility. From these, we have inherited the customs and symbols of the Easter egg and Easter rabbit. Dyed eggs also formed part of the rituals of the ancient, pre-Christian Babylonian mystery religions. "The egg as a symbol of fertility and of renewed life goes back to the ancient Egyptians and Persians, who had also the custom of coloring and eating eggs during their spring festival." 2"Like the Easter egg, the Easter hare came to Christianity from antiquity. The hare is associated with the moon in the legends of ancient Egypt and other peoples....Through the fact that the Egyptian word for hare, UM, means also "open" and "period," that hare came to be associated with the idea of periodicity, both lunar and human, and with the beginning of new life in both the young man and young woman, and so a symbol of fertility and of the renewal of life. As such, the hare became linked with Easter...eggs." 2Christian tradition states that when Mary Magdalene visited Emperor Tiberias (14 - 37 CE), she gave him a red egg as a symbol of the Resurrection -- a symbol of new life. Some believe that the Christian tradition of giving eggs to each other at Easter time came from this event. 8

Because Easter originated from Egypt. It was a celebration in honor of Queen Ishtar hence Easter. Her sacred animal (as in some owned sacred cats or dogs) was a rabbit. The egg was also known as sacred to her (I don't know why) so it was celebrated with an egg and a rabbit (or what is now an Easter bunnie) pagan religion has been changed slightly over and over again until it became a holiday celebrated by all (even Christians) internationally.

The Easter Bunny, carrying a clutch of magical eggs in a grass-lined basket, symbolizes new life in the coming of Spring. She has no connection with Christianity, for Easter was old long before the Christians got their hands on it.

We keep a lot of traditions around from the past that don't make a lot of sense anymore. Rabbits and eggs were both symbols of life, and spring, and when old traditions met new traditions some things stuck and others didn't... just like those traditions stick today, even though it's pretty silly to hide plastic eggs and then go searching for them. It's just something that was passed down to us, and we thought it was fun, so we do it too.

Both rabbits and legs are fertility symbols from when the Spring Equinox was celebrated as a festival long before Christianity came to Europe. Rabbits were the symbol Eostre. When the Christians first came they appropriated the festivel as a symbol of their christ's resurrection, the name was altered to Easter. The eggs were a symbol of coming life in the old religion the Christians tacked on the concept of breaking out of the tomb.,

The hidden purpose was that the new converts would come to church on Easter to celebrate the old rites as the same time as the Christians and make the local church dignitaries proud of the rate of conversion based on the number of attendees.

Who sat on your Easter egg?

I did... I sat on my own Easter eggs. The Easter Bunny (originally a hare, but also now includes the rabbit) or the Easter Chick (other birds are used in some countries) are the most traditional Easter characters. I live in Australia, so perhaps it was the Easter Bilby.
