Why is sc called the palmetto state?

The Palmetto Tree (aka, Cabbage Palm) is the State Tree of South Carolina. In the Revolutionary War, Palmetto Tree logs were used to build a fort on Sullivan's Island in South Carolina to defend the state against British attackers. The Palmetto Tree was named the official State Tree in 1939. This is why the Palmetto Tree is on the flag, to show respect and rememberance to the tree that help defend our State.

Fort Moultrie was were British Ship attacked and Palmetto Trees surrounded the fort, and bounced right off of them. Pretty Cool!~....The rear section of the Fort was unfinished and was a crucial attack point as Sullivan's Island is accessible from the rear after entering Charleston Harbor. The British Royal Navy sent 9 of its best man-of-war ships including the prized 50 gun ship The Bristol.

The palmetto is a short, well-shaped, broad-topped palm tree very common along the South Carolina coast. It's the state tree and on the state flag.

SC is called the Palmettto State because of the prevalence of these trees in the "low country" and because of the palmetto's role in repelling the British navy's first attempt to take Charleston Harbor (called Charles Towne then) during the Revolution.

When they learned of the British approach, the South Carolinians hastily built Fort Moultrie of Palmetto logs at the harbor entrance. Not only were they low on ammo, but the new fort was incomplete, not even having a back side, when the British ships arrived.

The British pounded the fort relentlessly with their cannon and could come in dangerously close, because the South Carolinians, having to preserve their ammo, fired only to drive the ships back when they were at close range.

In spite of the close range, the British naval guns couldn't destroy the fort, because of the palmetto walls. They were strong, but soft and spongy, and so they absorbed and held, rather than being blown to bits. The Brits saw they couldn't succeed and retreated, and Charleston remained free for several more years - thanks to the palmetto.
