Stars coalesce via the gravitational collapse of vast interstellar clouds of hydrogen and helium gas. As the gas collapses it heats up, eventually synthesizing heavier elements via a process of nuclear fusion. Most stars eventually grow old and die, but a few are large enough to burst into supernova.

The stellar life cycle is essentially the same for most stars, hence it is a "cycle" even though the process does not truly repeat. In the event of supernova explosions, the material can be gathered to form a new, second generation star, but this star will be rife with heavier elements than the progenitor star.
