The most common species of ladybird in Britain is the seven-spot ladybird. This bright red ladybird has seven spots and is thought to have inspired the name ladybird: "Lady" referring to the Virgin Mary (Our lady) who in early paintings is seen wearing a red cloak; the seven spots are symbolic of the seven joys and seven sorrows of Mary.

That the ladybug has a graceful flight (albeit brief and slow), that it is the "bird" of Our Lady Mary, and that it preys upon pests are reasons why the ladybird is called a ladybird.

Specifically, the insect in question (Coccinellidae family) does not cover long distances in short time periods because of its heavier, outer set of wings. It nevertheless flies more bird-like, more gracefully than most other beetles. Its grace also is honored in its traditional reverence as the beetle, bug, insect of Mary (flourished 1st century B.C. - 1st century A.D.), mother of Jesus of Nazareth (7-2 B.C. - A.D. 30-33) since the black-spotted, red body in its seven-spotted, red-shelled manifestation (Coccinella septempunctata) recalls Mary's red cloak, seven joys and seven sorrows. That reverence in part stems from the beetle's role as a voracious predator of aphids and mealybugs.
