Food has changed over the years because in the 60's for instance there were no fridges so food was bought fresh every day by the house wifes. There wasn't a supermarket so people had to go to lots of different shops e.g. butchers, grocer's & the green grocer's etc.

Im not really sure why we need it but I think it is helpful because it shows you how much candy, meat, dairy, carbs, fruits and vegetables you need to have in one day so you can have a balanced diet and not have too much in one given day. People with Diabetes and other weight issues should find this helpful so that way they know what to cut back on and to also eat a moderate amount of these foods every day
The food pyramid diet has had changes throughout the years. With a better understanding of the nutritional needs of pregnant women, children, diabetics, and with the growing concern of high blood pressure, Heart disease, stroke and cancer, the diet has had to make changes in order to stay relevant.
As more research is done we learn how to better describe a healthy diet. Also, the information in the pyramid can be better expressed by an improvement in the representation.
