Why is the battleship Bismarck famous?
For sinking the British flag ship HMS Hood in a lucky hit. She was also famous due to the fact she has been incorrectly called the biggest and most powerful battleship of all time. Also due to the sheer determination to kill her in Britain has lead to her being remembered.

It's famous because British writer Cecil S. Forester wrote a book about it in 1959, and the British made a film about it called "Sink the Bismarck" in 1960. Otherwise, it san…k itself on it's maiden voyage rather than letting the British navy take credit for sinking it. German sailors (there were hundreds of survivors) had been stating for years that THEY scuttled the Bismarck, and the Royal Navy didn't sink it. Dr. Ballard dove on the vessel in the 1980's and proved that the German's were correct! They sunk their own ship!
The battleship Bismarck was named for Germany's formerChancellor Otto von Bismarck.
No "battleship" was sunk by Bismarck. The "battlecruiser" HMS Hood was sunk by Bismarck on May 24, 1941. Battlecruisers do not have the armor that battleships are built with, …being designed for speed and firepower. Hood, however, was larger than any of the British battleships of World War II, and was one of the most heavily armed British capital ships.

HMS Hood. HMS Hood was a battlecruiser and was not intended to engage a battleship especially one such as Bismarck which was at that time the biggest battleship afloat along w…ith her sister ship Tirpitz. Basically Battlecruisers engaged cruisers and avoided Battleships. Bismarck actually weighed in at 53,000 tons against Hood at 42,000. It seems logical that every ton on a warship is there for a purpose so a disparity of 11,000 tons could represent quite a lot of armour. Hood was scheduled for amongst other things having her deck armour improved.
The battleship Bismarck was rendered unsteerable due to a torpedo hit, then blasted repeatedly by battleship salvoes and by torpedoes on the morning of May 27, 1941. Although… the battleship was severely damaged and rendered incapable of battle, the ship was reportedly scuttled by her crew. The captain and first officer had been killed, as had Fleet commander Admiral Lutjens. Few of the senior officers survived. The pursuing British ships had mostly retired from the area due to the threat of U-boats or German aircraft flying from France.
The German battleship Bismarck was sunk on May 27, 1941 by a British fleet off Brest, France. One account lists only 115 survivors and 1,995 killed of Bismarck's crew. It i…s unknown how many were lost after the ship was scuttled, because neither British nor German ships reached most of the men in the water. The dead included the captain and almost all senior officers, killed on the bridge by a 14-inch shell fired by the British battleships.
He was a powerful Prussian political leader who became Germany's first chancellor after unification in 1871.
The captain of the German battleship Bismarck was Ernst Lindemann.
One. In the Battle of the Denmark Strait (May 24, 1941), the British battleship HMS Hood was hit at long range by a salvo from Bismarck, exploded, and sank, leaving only thre…e survivors. It is suspected that a shell penetrated Hood's forward ammunition magazine. Three days later, the Bismarck was first damaged by a torpedo, then blasted by a British fleet, before finally being scuttled by her crew.

Her function was to sink convoys, she was given great speed and powerful guns for this task. She wasn't made to fight other battleships hence her major weaknesses which became… apparent when she faced the British e.g. her turrets were poorly armoured so were easily knocked out.
