The Constitution of the United States is the highest law of the land because each state also has its own government. This way the states cannot make laws that are so outrageous that no one can follow them.

The Founding Fathers intended the Constitution to supply the legal framework for the new United States government, to make up for the deficiencies of the Articles of Confederation, under which the government operated for the previous decade.

Article VI of the US Constitution addresses federal powers, and was part of the original Constitution created September 17, 1787 and ratified June 21, 1788. Upon ratification, the text of the Constitution became law, and supersedes anything that came before or after, although the document has been modified a number of times.

Article VI, Paragraph 2 (also known as the "Supremacy Clause") of the US Constitution states:

"This Constitution, and the laws of the United States which shall be made in pursuance thereof; and all treaties made, or which shall be made, under the authority of the United States, shall be the supreme law of the land; and the judges in every state shall be bound thereby, anything in the Constitution or laws of any State to the contrary notwithstanding."

Once the States ratified the Constitution, all of the text, including the Supremacy Clause, became binding law.

A constitution is a fundamental set of principles, to be clearly stated as a basis for the laws. It states the underlying rationale for the laws. This makes it more important than any given law, and if a law is passed that violates the constitution, it can be voided because of that.

The United States Constitution is considered the Law of the Land because it established the laws. With an established code of laws there were consequences and repercussions for breaking laws.
