Like all seas, rivers carry bits of sedimentary rock down them to the sea. Salt as you may well know is in this rock. The mediterreanean is probably saltier than others for a few reasons: * Higher salt content rocks & soil * More rivers going to the sea

The salinity level of the Mediterranean is determined mainly from the balance between evaporation of sea water (which increases salinity) and fresh water from rain and rivers. The inflow of water from the Atlantic plays a minor role as far as salinity is concerned.

In the mediterranean evaporation is strong and rain and rivers flow (mainly Nile and Ebro) are decreasing which indeed lead to an increase in overall salinity of the whole Mediterranean. Another contribution is the flow of high salinity water from the Suez Canal which increased considerably during the past due to its deepenings and widenings for navigation purposes.

Salinity is controlled by a balance between water removed by evaporation and freshwater added by rivers and rain. The Mediterranean Sea in Europe has very high salinity - 38ppt or more. It is almost closed from the main ocean, and there is more evaporation than there is rain or extra freshwater added from rivers.

According to Wikipedia it has approximately 38g of salts dissolved per litre (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salinity), making it slightly saltier than most other seas/oceans.

Surrounded almost completely by land, the Mediterranean mixes with the Atlantic Ocean only through the narrow Strait of Gibraltar at its western-most point.

Because it is a semi closed sea, water flows in from the Atlantic through the straights of Gibraltar and then evaporates in the Mediterranean, increasing the salinity.
