The sound wave is actually a pressure wave. The air molecules move together and then farther apart, creating volumes which alternate between (slightly greater than normal pressure) and (slightly less than the normal pressure). A volume, at a specific pressure, can be expressed as energy (pressure times volume has the same units as energy: Newton meter, or Joule). You might look at sound-physics dot com, for more info.
