Why is seal whacking a problem?

Beating baby seals to death could be a problem both in terms of animal abuse and making sure that seals stay a renewable resource. Whatever your views about hunting, or eating or wearing animal products, walking up to seals who are defenseless and beating them to death doesn't even seem like hunting... only like mass brutality. Also, when it is baby seals for their distinctive white fur, you limit the next generation and harm the ability for the species to renew itself. Some people try to stand up for the rights of chickens so that they can walk around and live a better life before being killed than having their feet cut off and having to sit in once place while being fattened up. It is a similar concern about the way that the killing is done, how humane it is, and the ethics of killing so many creatures to produce luxury items. Similar to killing elephants for their tusks, or gorillas for their hands, except that there are larger seal populations to start with.
