Referring to ancient religions is not so much insulting as it is incorrect.

Primitive refers more to very simple--rudimentary. To the people of the past, there was nothing that their religion lacked. It fully suited their purposes, some of which we are ignorant. In the past, such quantitative evaluations (aka labeling) seemed useful, but over time it has become obvious that this was shortsighted. Early peoples were much more conscious and knowledgeable about their environments than we are.
